Animals can have strange behaviors. Cats and Dogs can raise your eyebrows at anytime.
Many have a paper fetish. I can't tell you why. I wish I could, but I'm not a behaviorist.
I can tell you why they chew wood. The urge to chew is strong in both cats and dogs, so they will chew on whatever they can. Wood is available.
Why they do other things...? I can't even guess.
